2025-2026 Fred Walden Rotarian of the Year

Every year, the Rotary Club of The Sandhills presents its highest individual honor — the Fred Walden Rotarian of the Year Award. It is an award that carries weight, not just because of what it recognizes, but because of whose name it bears.

Who Was Fred Walden?

Fred Walden was one of our founders — one of the original 24 members who chartered this club. For 30 years, he opened every meeting with a prayer. For 30 years, he served on the board. For 30 years, he maintained perfect attendance. Fred was a civil rights advocate, a gentleman, and a friend to everyone in the room. He was the kind of man who could disagree with you and somehow make you feel better afterward — truthful, fair, kind, and always focused on the greater good.

When we present an award with Fred’s name on it, we are not simply recognizing service. We are recognizing character. We are recognizing courage.

This Year’s Recipient: Philip Bailey

This year, that honor goes to Philip Bailey.

Philip has faced a medical journey that would have stopped most people cold — and yet he stayed connected, stayed positive, and stayed committed to Rotary. He loves this community, loves this club, and loves the mission of service above self.

An avid golfer, Philip brings the same mix of grit, humor, and determination to the course that he brings to life. And among his greatest joys is taking his wife and very special son to Formula 1 races — not just as vacations, but as memories, milestones, and moments of pure family connection.

Philip has lived Rotary this year the way Fred Walden lived Rotary for 30 years — with quiet strength, unwavering integrity, and a heart for others.

Philip, your courage and resilience have inspired every one of us. We are proud to honor you with the award that bears Fred’s name.
